A political controversy has erupted after the Congress party Kerala unit posted a message on social media asking Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant to resign. The post drew sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Congress of disrespecting the judiciary and putting pressure on an important constitutional institution. The post was later deleted, but the issue triggered a fresh political exchange between the two parties.
The controversy began after CJI Surya Kant said that law and order was not his area of responsibility when asked about security restrictions imposed in Delhi during ongoing protests. In response, the Congress Keralam unit posted on X Dear Surya Kant, if law and order is not your domain, resign now. We will find your replacement who can handle it. The statement quickly attracted attention and criticism from political leaders.
BJP leaders strongly attacked the Congress over the post. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused the party of threatening the Chief Justice and insulting the Constitution. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also criticised Congress through a social media post. The BJP linked the controversy to concerns about the independence of constitutional institutions and the role of political parties in public debate.
The dispute comes amid protests by Opposition parties over alleged irregularities in electoral processes and demands for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, have also approached the Supreme Court over their concerns. CJI Surya Kant has said that people and elected representatives can raise their concerns through the proper legal process. The latest exchange has added another layer to the ongoing political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.
