Karwa Chauth is one of the most popular Hindu festivals celebrated by married women across India. On this holy day, wives keep a strict fast without food or water from sunrise to moonrise, praying for their husband health, long life, and prosperity. In 2026, Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday, October 29. Women dress in beautiful traditional clothes, apply mehendi, and gather in the evening for sacred puja rituals before offering water to the rising moon.

Queen Veeravati Legend, Lord Ganesha Katha, and Easy Puja Vidhi

The core of Karwa Chauth is reading two sacred stories, the Queen Veeravati Katha and the Ganesh Ji Vrat Katha, followed by the official Puja Vidhi. During her first fast, Queen Veeravati fainted due to extreme hunger. Her seven loving brothers tricked her by creating a false moon using a lamp behind a tree. Thinking the real moon had risen, Veeravati broke her fast early. This mistake angered Lord Ganesha, and her husband suddenly lost his life. Heartbroken, Veeravati wept and prayed with complete devotion to Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. During Karwa Chauth puja, women also recite the Ganesh Ji katha of the wise blind woman who cleverly asked Lord Ganesha for eyes, wealth, and a grandson all at once. Moved by Veeravati true repentance, Lord Ganesha restored her husband life.

For the Puja Vidhi, women prepare a decorated thali with a diya, karwa (water pot), sweets, and a sieve (channi). In the evening, women listen to the Vrat Katha together and rotate their thalis. When the moon rises, women view the moon through the sieve, offer arghya (water), and look at their husbands. The husband then gives his wife water and a sweet to break the fast.
