Artificial Intelligence is changing the way people work, but its benefits may take more time to appear in employee salaries. Wipro Managing Partner and Global Head of Business Process Services, Jasjit Kang, said that companies may need another 12 months before clear AI driven productivity gains can be linked to salaries. Kang said that broad productivity improvement from AI has not yet been seen across all levels. Some benefits are already visible in entry level work, but the overall impact is still developing.
He also said that AI is changing the skills companies want from freshers. Wipro continues to hire entry level employees, but it now looks for people who understand AI tools, can solve problems and can learn quickly. According to Kang, AI could replace around 15 to 20 percent of jobs in Wipro business process services and business process management division. Routine work such as basic customer queries and data entry is among the tasks that can be handled by AI.
At the same time, new and more complex roles are expected to grow. Wipro is expanding into areas such as autonomous vehicles, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, where AI is creating new business opportunities. Kang said employees who use AI effectively and take on more complex responsibilities can move into higher paying roles. The discussion around AI and salaries, however, is expected to become clearer over the next year.
