Metro stations are usually built underground to save space and make travel easier in busy cities. But some stations are located so deep below the ground that passengers need several minutes to reach the platforms. A recent report by ABP Live highlights some of the world deepest metro stations and India upcoming engineering project in Lucknow. China Hongyancun Metro Station, located in the hilly city of Chongqing, is considered the world deepest metro station. It is around 116 metres below ground level. Passengers may need about eight minutes on escalators to reach the platform from the upper entrance.
Pyongyang in North Korea also has a very deep metro system. Some stations are reported to be more than 110 metres underground. The network was designed with emergency shelter functions in mind. Ukraine Arsenalna Metro Station in Kyiv is another famous example. It lies around 105.5 metres below ground and became a shelter for residents during the Russia Ukraine war in 2022.
Now, India is preparing for a major metro engineering project in Lucknow. The upcoming Pandeyganj station is planned to be around 37 metres underground, making it India deepest metro station. Its special design will place one track above the other because of limited space in the old city. These stations show how engineers are building transport systems in challenging locations while trying to make city travel faster and more convenient.
