World Space Week 2026 is being celebrated globally from October 4 to 10, bringing attention to the rapid transformation of space science, rocket technology and commercial space exploration. This year theme, “Rocket Revolution” focuses on how advances in launch technology are making access to space faster, more affordable and increasingly available to companies, universities and new space faring nations.
The annual celebration was established by the United Nations in 1999. October 4 marks the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, the first human made satellite to orbit Earth, while October 10 commemorates the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967.
One of the biggest changes highlighted this year is the development of reusable rockets. By reducing the need to build a completely new rocket for every launch, reusable technology can lower costs and increase launch frequency. Commercial companies, startups and academic institutions are now playing a growing role in the global space sector.
India is also participating in World Space Week through programmes involving ISRO centres, educational institutions and students. Events include lectures, public outreach programmes and activities designed to encourage interest in space science and technology. As humanity prepares for more ambitious lunar missions and deeper space exploration, World Space Week 2026 highlights a simple message the future of space is becoming more accessible and the rocket revolution has only just begun.
